Change your password
Set a new password from the Security tab, and what happens to your other devices.
You can change your password any time from the Security tab in My Account. You’ll need your current password.
Change your password
- Open My Account and click the Security tab.
- Type your Current password.
- Type your new password in New password. A strength meter underneath rates it as you type.
- Type it again in Confirm new password. If the two don’t match, you’ll see “Passwords don’t match.”
- Click Change password. The button stays greyed out until your current password is filled in, the new password is strong enough and both new passwords match.
When it works you’ll see “Password changed. You’re still signed in here; other devices were signed out.”
Tick Show passwords to see what you’ve typed, which helps on a phone.
How strong does it need to be?
The new password has to reach at least “Medium” on the strength meter. A good rule of thumb is at least 10 characters mixing upper and lowercase letters, numbers or symbols, or any 14 characters or more. A short phrase of a few unrelated words works well and is easy to remember. Very common passwords, and passwords that contain the first part of your email address (the bit before the @), are never accepted.
What happens to your other devices
Changing your password signs you out everywhere else, such as your phone or a shared computer. You stay signed in on the device you used to make the change. Sign back in on your other devices with the new password.
If something goes wrong
- “Your current password is incorrect.” Check for caps lock and try again.
- “Too many incorrect attempts. Please wait 15 minutes and try again.” After five wrong current passwords, password changes are paused for 15 minutes to protect your account.
- You don’t know your current password. Log out, then on the login page click Forgot your password? and follow the emailed link to set a new one.
